Bench-to-Bedside and Back Program (BtB)

Applications Instructions

Submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) electronically via ProposalCentral**. See Deadlines for dates and follow the LOI application instructions sheet and tips to submit the LOI online. Once endorsement from the Scientific Director and Clinical Director of the applicant's perspective IC, has been received, the system can be accessed for development of the full proposal.

Submit the Full Proposal electronically via ProposalCentral**. Full proposals must be submitted online by the intramural PI through ProposalCentral. See Deadlines for dates and follow the Full Proposal application instructions sheet and tips to submit the proposal online.

Please note that the following forms must be included in the full proposal:

  • Budget Form (can also be downloaded through ProposalCentral) If applicable, budget requests for extramural partners should include an existing extramural grant number that is eligible to receive the supplement and must include the indirect costs. If the extramural collaborator does not have a grant when the Bench-to-Bedside and Back Program (BtB) application is submitted, supplemental funding will be delayed or denied. The extramural investigator(s) cannot receive all or most of the project's direct cost and at least half of the funds must be directed to the intramural investigator(s).   • NIH Biosketch for all principal and associate investigators.
  • Checklist (can also be downloaded on the ProposalCentral website).

Next Steps

The proposal is forwarded for review by the full Bench-to-Bedside and Back Program (BtB) Review Team which is assembled to represent diverse scientific/medical disciplines, based upon the research categories of the applications.


Peer Review Process

  • Reviewers with subject matter expertise will review submitted proposals and assign scores based on the NIH scoring system and program guidelines.
  • Summary statements are released to applicants by Bench-to-Bedside and Back Program (BtB) Program officer.

Designation of Awards

  • Funding decisions will be made by program officials in consultation with donor offices.
  • Funds are distributed by the earliest possible date, depending on budgetary conditions.
